ImaginOn Hosts a Safe Journey Program

Teen mothers and their children participate in storytime

On Thursday, August 18, 2016, ImaginOn hosted a special morning program for a group of teen mothers and their children (ages 0-3) from Safe Journey and Adolescent Parenting Program (APP). The Teen Loft Manager presented the mothers with available opportunities for programming and materials, and then two staff members from Spangler Library conducted a color-themed family storytime with songs and flannels and scarves, followed by an interactive Every Child Ready to Read presentation that featured the early literacy practices of reading, talking, singing, writing, and playing. The program closed with literacy-themed craft stations, and each mother received an ImaginOn tote bags with bubbles and free books (provided by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s Children’s Services Coordinator). With assistance from the circulation department, at the end of the program, every single mother and infant left with a CML public library card in their hand and a greater understanding of the free resources available to them.

Safe Journey is a program of Communities in Schools (CIS) that provides comprehensive case management services for teenage mothers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools as well as parenting programs that assist participants with completing their high school education, providing counseling and educational resources, and effective parenting skills.
