Red Read Party

Students from Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s School of Theatre Training put on three different plays in one jam-packed weekend of theatre, as OnStage 2008 took over the McColl Family Theatre from May 16-18.

This year, over 125 students in grades 4-12 performed with technical support from Children’s Theatre’s artistic and educational staff. OnStage 2008 included classic musical Fiddler on the Roof, the American folktale Wiley and the Hairy Man and the swash-buckling epic The Three Musketeers. For complete information and online registration, visit www.ctcharlotte.org.

Children of Jerusalem

Fourth grade students involved in ImaginOn’s year-long classroom collaboration with First Ward Elementary School have been hard at work this year, and their efforts have culminated in a book! The year included professional development workshops in performance poetry for the teachers, and sessions for kids that helped them find creative ways to open up their writing through a study of Romare Bearden’s artwork, a look at (and listen to) the history and artistry of jazz, and many ways to use drama, theatre and storytelling to help move ideas from the brain to the page.

The year’s final project is a book called The Dream Keeper’s Alphabet.  It is an ABC book inspired by the Langston Hughes poem, The Dream Keeper. In it the fourth-grade writers and illustrators share advice on how to make dreams come true.  Copies will be available at all PLCMC library branches by Fall, 2008.

Either way, once you sign up you will be eligible to collect prizes once you complete 15 hours and 25 hours of reading. Attending a library programs also counts for one hour of reading, so if you attend the party you can sign up and knock out an hour!  This year’s prizes are also better than ever, with a coupon for free food, a drawstring backpack, a $5 print coupon, and a 64 mb flash drive!

As an added bonus, this summer teen participants have the opportunity to waive up to $20 in fines and fees from their library cards. At registration, 15 hours of reading, and 25 hours of reading, participants will be able to print out a fine waiver coupon that can be redeemed in the Loft or at any local branch library.  The fine waiver coupons may be used to waive fines, lost items, and/or lost cards for the summer reading participant only and each coupon is good for only one use.
