Teen Read Week

This year’s 3rd annual Teen Read Week party was a HUGE success! More than 1,000 teens came out to ImaginOn on a Saturday night to help kick off the celebration of Teen Read Week with a live DJ, a giant boxing ring, caricature artists, arcade-style Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero, free food and drinks, prizes, the crew from Power 98’s “No Limit Larry and the Morning Madhouse” Morning Show, and more. You really have to see it to believe it! Check out photos from the party on our Flickr site: http://tinyurl.com/2gghbj

Wizardry of Oz

Wizard of Oz Performance Children’s Theatre’s 60th Anniversary Season got off to a spectacular start with a sell-out production of The Wizard of Oz. Audiences flocked to a record-breaking 5 weeks of performances, and public attendance topped 10,000, making this the best attended single production in the Theatre’s history.

Celebrity Sighting

The Library’s Fall Film Series, “Southern Flavor: Five Films About the South” welcomed a surprise celebrity guest on October 22. The film, 1964’s “Nothing But a Man” stars Ivan Dixon as Duff Anderson, a man struggling against the racial status quo. You may also recognize Ivan Dixon from the popular TV series “Hogan’s Heroes.” And there he was in the audience! The Fall Film Series has finished, but don’t miss the Winter Series, beginning January 14th!

Novello in Second Life

Novello author Ishmael Beah was audio streamed into Teen Second Life
during his presentation at ImaginOn…meaning teens all over the world could listen to Ishmael's presentation. PLCMC has space on Teen Second Life, an online program. Our interactive virtual library allows teens to create programs and events. The teens built a theatre in this space in 3D, and an audience of over 50 teens virtually gathered to listen to Ishmael's speech.
Teens from Hawaii, United Kingdom, Mexico, Charlotte, and more heard Ishmael's story of being a child soldier. He also answered a question from the Teen Second Life audience, as questions were passed to him through a moderator.
According to one teen listener, the event "was deep and very informative."

Wordplay Saturday- Novello

What do you get when you combine a gorgeous fall day with 9 children’s authors and illustrators, Kevin Clash and his sidekick Elmo, an outdoor stage featuring live performances all day, and a city block filled with kids’ activities? Well, if that block is outside ImaginOn, it must be WordPlay Saturday! Over 5,000 people attended this year’s literary festival for children and families. The theme, “Reading Opens Your World” brought together local international organizations, some partnering with the Library for the first time - we look forward to working together again.
