2008 VOYA AWARD Winner

The Loft @ ImaginOn’s 6R program won a national award this year – VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Journal’s Most Valuable Program of 2008. This monthly environmental craft project gives teens the opportunity to Reduce, Reuse, Reclaim, Redesign, Recycle, and Renew by using discarded materials to create useful products.

In the words of Teen Services Manager Michele Gorman, “We hope that actions speak louder than words and that teens who participate in the 6R Movement develop a better understanding of how small actions today will ultimately impact the global environment tomorrow.”

Projects to date have included building furniture out of phone books, rehabbing a dollhouse for use in Spangler Children’s Library, Geekwear Jewelry made from computer parts, and wallets made from cassettes and playing cards. Loft staff are always scouting new trash and planning new projects – drop by with your imagination ready!

Veteran's Day

Alan Poindexter, the director of Peter Pan, guided kids and parents onstage for a look at the set and costumes in this free program co-sponsored by the Children’s Theatre and the Library.

Actors Nic Bryan and Stephen Friedrich and three stagehands revealed the mechanics – and the muscles – involved in making actors fly and crocodiles walk. After the tour, participants created life-size images of themselves in flying positions that were displayed throughout ImaginOn. Watch for more behind-the-scenes programs for A Year with Frog and Toad and Alice in Concert.

We Love Trash!
Especially when it can be turned into treasure…and ImaginOn’s balcony gallery is filled with treasure right now! A group of local homeschool students created “The Landfill Art Show” as part of a class project. They used materials that would ordinarily be destined for a landfill to create useful or decorative objects.

The pieces are displayed at ImaginOn, and have inspired visitors to create their own! Every Tuesday and Thursday through December, we’ll be offering Trash Art Workshops from 1pm - 2pm. Drop by to find the trash in the treasures on display, and add your own work of trash art.
